Biodiversity challenge – Adzebill

The final cut

Mini moa
Lookalikes,
Gone with Gondwanaland.
Zealandia expands,
Contracts.
A continent divides;
Man conquers,
Multiplies,
Subtracts
From North and South
The axe-beaked islanders.
Sum total:
Minus two,
Remainder none.

Biodiversity challenge – Kea

Kea aura

Glacier cool,
Ice-axe sharp,
Keratin tough:
The unmistakable
Green, gold and scarlet
Psittacine starlet.
Twenty-four carat
Quintessence of parrot.

Biodiversity challenge – Wrybill

Star-crossed plovers

Wrybills for your affection,
With a natural bent for turning heads.
Last of the red-hot plovers,
Declining in their shingle beds.
Desperate for greater protection,
Increasingly feeling the strain.
Give them a chance to recover;
Don’t make them wade in vain.
