Biodiversity challenge – Welwitschia

Awesome leaves

Bizarre bifoliate
Desert dweller,

Primeval perennial,

Ancient appendaged
Coniferous conundrum,

Westerly wind-whipped
Shredded succulent,

Namib native,

Sea-fog sifting
Moisture magnet,

Sunlight screening
Serpent shelter,

Tourist trap,

Botanist baffling
Floral freak.

Biodiversity challenge – Nepenthes rajah

Pitcher postcards

Fly-on-the-wall documentary

In one fell.

The Fly and the Pitcher

One blue bottle
Crawling on the lip.
One blue bottle
Crawling on the lip.
And if one blue bottle
Should accidentally slip,
You’ll see one blue bottle
Take an acid dip.

The Big Pitcher

I’m Nepenthes rajah,
Your gracious host.
As meat-eating plants go,
I’m larger than most.
Make yourself at home
On my peristome,
Take a dip in the cool
Of my private pool.
Come lounge with the lizard
Stuck in my gizzard,
You’ll be snug as a bug
In my one-litre jug.
Drop in and discover
The principal use
For my viscoelastic
Gastric juice.

Biodiversity challenge – Bastard gumwood

St Helena cliffhanger

Desolate survivor,
Left for dead;
Sad bastard
Hanging by a solitary thread
In less than splendid isolation,
Clinging to a crevice
On your blighted mid-Atlantic microdot,
Last bastion of so much doomed diversity.

Vanishingly rare,
With that unappealing
Nom de guerre,
You must be feeling
Utterly alone,
Abandoned, exiled
À la Bonaparte,
Grown apart
From all your tree companions.

Some would say
The gumwood’s had its day;
We should just let the dying bastard
Fade away.
Not without a fight.

Not tonight.

Biodiversity challenge – Venus flytrap

The tendril trap

Snappy dressing scarlet lady,
Trigger-happy femme fatale,
Outstretched fingers and love me tendrils,
Beckoning you to a pointy reckoning.

Craving the patter of tiny feet,
The gnat-like tread
Of dead meat walking;
Unwitting prey
Threading its way,
On tiptoe through
Her two lips.

Watch your step
And find the gap.
Mind her
Ruby booby trap.
Too late, wham bam,
Thank you, ma’am;
Lockdown, lockjaws,
Cage doors slam.

The chlorophyll clam
And her latest squeeze;
Belle dame sans merci,
Bon appétit.
